Kanye West and Jay-Z Take a Stroll Through Yeezy’s Hood

Yeezy shows Jay-Z (and us) his childhood hometown, Chicago aka Chi Town, as the duo stop in the Windy City as part of their Watch the Throne tour. In the opening sequences, Ye says “Always knew it was gonna happen like this.” Adding, “Where I’m at right now is where I’m at when I was like four years old.”

In the latest episode of VOYR, an interactive social network documenting the WTT tour, West takes Jay-Z to his childhood home on the Southside of Chicago before performing on stage later.
The video features some influential Chi Towners including spoken word artist Malik Yusef and Buck-Fiftys AKA Wing Dings. The video concludes with a backstage conversation between West and famed director Spike Lee.
West shares some intimate perspective on his craft saying, “We have to rethink, reinspire. Wash the brain, don’t brainwash. And allow people to think for themselves… I feel like people can find themselves sooner, you know how people are like ‘I don’t know what I want to be’. Well you know what you want to be but you don’t want to say out loud what you want to be cause you don’t think it’s cool enough.”
West comes off as very down to earth and you can tell how relaxed and at home he is back in Chicago. The childhood story that West shares about how he got into one of Chicago’s most prestigious elementary schools or “grammar school” as West says, is actually pretty interesting.
