Los Angeles based alternative rap collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, commonly abbreviated to OFWGKTA or known simply as Odd Future, has been removed from the Auckland, New Zealand stop for musical festival Big Day Out.
The decision was prompted by protest from Auckland activist Calum Bennachie, who strongly urged the city’s council to prevent Odd Future from performing. The Big Day Out venue, Mt. Smart Stadium, is property of Auckland’s City Council.
Bennachie said in a letter addressed to Big Day Out’s organizers: “Lyrics such as those played by Odd Future increase the societal discourse against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, a discourse that encourages bullying and violence”. He continues saying “If it is acceptable to say something similar to ‘gays are a cancer on society that deserves to be eliminated,’ then what group would be next?”
The council decided on ordering the festival to remove Odd Future from the festival’s lineup in Auckland. However, Big Day Out promoter Ken West said that he plans on organizing a separate show with Odd Future headlining. The Australian stops of the festival will not be affected by Bennachie’s protests.
This is the second time that Big Day Out has faced protest from activists. In 2010, gay rights activists protested dancehall artist Beenie Man’s inclusion in the lineup. He was subsequently removed from the Auckland stop of the festival.
