Former member of The Format, Nate Ruess, returns with the hit single “We Are Young” with his newly formed band fun. The New York indie group collaborates with tuxedo fresh, Janelle Monáe (one of soul’s primmest artists today) for the track. “We Are Young” delves into the epic tragedies and beauty of youth, Reuss’ voice escalating to soaring feats of emotion and dropping into sudden vulnerability. Monáe’s contribution is meticulous and calculated, adding a subtle sense of order to Ruess’ tumultuous vocals. The result is a stark and riveting new single that is currently sitting pretty at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The following acoustic version offers a raw take on “We Are Young.” Monáe’s voice, which is unfortunately inhibited in the original, is given a bit more focus thanks to the subdued instrumentals.
